Muhammad Faique
Late in the month of June 2007, Shahdad Kot district was devastated by floods caused by cyclone Yemyin. Several poor families and farmers lost their livestock and crop to the floods. Due to the loss, they began migrating into cities in search of jobs.
Hidaya immediately responded with its One Million meals and container shipment (clothes distribution, tent distribution) projects to those affected by the floods. In November 2007, Hidaya also initiated its Farmer Assistance project for the farmers affected by the floods. Hidaya’s objective was to help rebuild and stabilize the lives of the poor farmers and their families by providing them with seeds to grow and harvest wheat.
Muhammad Faique is a 30 yr old married farmer with four family members and a resident village Mirpur Buriro, Shahdad Kot district. This village is located 56 kilometers from the city of Shahdad Kot.
He cultivates approximately 04 acres land. To cultivate one acre of land, a farmer has to use 50kgs (110.23 lbs) of seed. Hidaya provided the 4 acres (200kgs or 440lbs) of wheat seeds at no cost to Muhammad Faique for cultivation.
At the end of the harvest, the land produced 83 maunds (3,320 kgs or 7,304 lbs) of wheat which amounts to approximately 58,100 rupees.
Muhammad Faique was overjoyed with the results because he did not know where he would get seeds without having to pay for them. He admired Hidaya’s work and how they conducted their survey, registration and distribution process. He also requested for Hidaya to install a water hand pump in this village.
