Abdul Qudoos

Late in the month of June 2007, Shahdad Kot district was devastated by floods caused by cyclone Yemyin. Several poor families and farmers lost their livestock and crop to the floods. Due to the loss, they began migrating into cities in search of jobs.

Hidaya immediately responded with its One Million meals and container shipment (clothes distribution, tent distribution) projects to those affected by the floods. In November 2007, Hidaya also initiated its Farmer Assistance project for the farmers affected by the floods. Hidaya’s objective was to help rebuild and stabilize the lives of the poor farmers and their families by providing them with seeds to grow and harvest wheat.

Abdul Qudoos is a 47 year old farmer with 10 family members and is a resident of village Mirpur Buriro, Shahdad Kot district.  This village is located 56 kilometers from the city of Shahdad Kot.

He cultivates approximately 12 acres of land every year. To cultivate one acre of land, a farmer has to use 50kgs (110.23 lbs) of seed.  He was able to purchase enough wheat seeds to cultivate only 8 acres of land which cost him 9,600 rupees. The remaining four acres worth of seed was provided by Hidaya at no cost to the farmers. To cultivate one acre of land, a farmer has to use 50kgs (110.23 lbs) of seed.

At the end of the season in April, the seeds provided by Hidaya produced 115 Maunds (4600kgs or 10,141.275 lbs) of wheat seed. This amounts to approximately 80,500 rupees in market value for the wheat produced this season.
