Sri Lanka Floods 2011

Heavy rains have caused terrible flooding affecting over one million people in Sri Lanka and displacing over 400,000 people from their homes. In terms of the numbers of people displaced and farmland ruined, the floods have been even more devastating than when Sri Lanka was hit by the Tsunami in 2004. Hidaya Foundation received reports from contacts in Sri Lanka that the weather change in the early days of the storm were so drastic from the normal tropical weather that it was the first time in the peoples’ lives they ever remember needing warm clothing.

The biggest immediate need is food for the displaced families, and down the road re-settlement will be a challenge for those who were poor to begin with.

Phase I – Immediate Relief:
Meals: $100 can feed a family for a month (packages include: dry ration, rice, lentils, canned fish, tea, sugar, etc.)
Phase II Rebuilding & Self Employment Projects:

Rebuilding Homes/Businesses: $200 can help a family repair their flood damaged home or business
Goat Farming: $200 can buy a pair of goats for a family to get started.
Chicken Farming: $50 can buy a flock of chicks and feeding supplies to get a family started

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the day of resurrection.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari #2284)
